Big news for the city’s infrastructure! While many have concerns about the referendum, this could be the jolt needed to take the next great strides in improving our city. We certainly hope so!
When Nicki Braxley, BTI’s champion, left for a year of work in Africa last summer, we thought it was the perfect time to solidify a partnership with our neighbors in Old Fourth Ward. Donell Woodson joined our rowdy group back then and brings not only a wealth of community action experience but also a slew of wonderful ideas and energy. He’s been pounding the pavement on behalf of BTI, and thanks to his hard work we’re now ready to start putting some plans into action for 2015!
There’s lots going on in our corner of Atlanta – the Edgewood Trolley, Krog Street Market and, of course, the Atlanta Beltline, to name a few.
Some other things happening around us:
YoBoulevard! continues their wonderful work
A new bond referendum offers some interesting possibilities for growth
The Parmalat complex looks to be the next great development on Memorial
BTI will be working in partnership with some of these initiatives this year, and on our own projects as well, to help make our communities even brighter and more vibrant. Stay tuned for more details, updates, and opportunities to get involved!
Don’t forget to keep an eye on our Facebook page. And be sure to sign up for email updates from the site.
We announced a few months ago that Living Walls is partnering with BTI to mural the entire length of the tunnel. Well friends, the time has arrived!
The artist MOMO will begin painting on April 17, and there are lots of fun events planned to celebrate all month long:
April 12, 9am – Tunnel Mural Community Clean-up
Ok, so this one’s not super fun, but it is necessary and important! Please join us to help make MOMO’s time painting more effective and pleasurable. Sign up for our event on Facebook, and please spread the word to your friends and neighbors. The more hands, the better!
April 19, 12-4pm – Crops & Crafts Market
Some of the best folks in town will be set up at this dual crafts and farmers market, with stops in both Cabbagetown and Old Fourth Ward. Come check out the wares, stock up on local produce and SAY GOODBYE to the old, ugly, dirty Boulevard Tunnel!
There will also be a Tour of Walls led by the Living Walls team at 2pm.
April 24, 4pm until… – Block Party and Pub Crawl
Come bask in the glow of the newly beautified tunnel, thanks to Living Walls and artist MOMO! See your neighborhood like never before! Bring your friends and raise a toast to living the good life! There will be stops all around Cabbagetown and Old Fourth Ward, including great beer at Milltown Tavern, gaming fun at Joystick and karaoke at Mother, to name a few.
We can’t wait to celebrate with y’all! Keep an eye out here an on Facebook for more details…
We worked hard these past few months to fundraise for a $10,500 camera overlooking the stairwells of the Boulevard Tunnel. The camera offers 24hr surveillance and is linked directly to the Atlanta Police Department. There is only a single power pole available, so location is not perfect, but will cover nearly three-quarters of the stairwell area. A HUGE thanks to the following donors:
City of Atlanta, NPU-N grant: $3700
Tom Aderhold, developer for The Stacks: $2000
CNIA/Natalyn Archibong: $1500
CSX Railway: $1500 (promised)
Cabbagetown Initiative (currently pending grant award): $1500
BTI Happy Hour fundraising: $300
